Well I found most of the answers to my questions and I will share them with you.

The first store along my adventure was called “The Den - Adult Concepts”. At first impression the store much like the name seemed very Welcoming and full of colors. The display in the window showed some elaborate BDSM leather gear mixed with some novelties and feather boas. This shop was mainly geared towards the straight and gay community. In fact it was one of the best sex stores in New Zealand.

The Den – Adult Concepts is actually a chain of stores originally from Australia. There are 3 physical stores in New Zealand and you can get more info on their website at www.theden.co.nz

I spoke to Lyall from The Den and he told me a bit about the store. I asked why the prices were so high and I was told that not a lot of sex toys are manufactured locally. The import taxes and shipping prices add to the bottom line price. For example an Eclectic Stimulation set cost around $3000.00 NZD. Lyall told me that the sex toys do not sell very well. However, what does sell well are the magazines, videos and admittance to back rooms.

The den at 348 K’Road (ph. 307 9191) was equipped with such a back room. This location was intended primarily for gay clientele. While I was talking to Lyall numerous men kept coming in and out of the back room, all with smiles on their faces…  The back room has showers, bathrooms a maze, private rooms. The price is only $10.00 for all day access + condom and lube (New Zealanders are very educated about safe sex).

The store has some rule. Clients must be over 16, Sex in the back room IS legal, and no violence against women is permitted including BDSM movies with women.
